What does it stand for?

DEXA or DXA stands for Dual-Energy X-ray absorptiometry

How does it help?

Why consider it?

  • More simple, more precise than other methods like (BMI and hydrostatic weighing)
  • Quick, results in only 6 to 7 minutes
  • Safe, low radiation levels

FAQS

What is a DEXA Scan

The DEXA uses small amounts of radiation to produce a whole picture of the body’s fat mass, lean mass and bone mass. In addition, the DEXA provides regional body fat results for the arms, legs, android (waist) and gynoid (hips), and can also do a reading for abdominal, or visceral, fat (depending on the machine). Visceral fat, or VAT, has been linked to metabolic disturbances, increased risk for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.

To find a DEXA Scan Partner near you click the Locations button above to and enter your zip code.

What results will I receive?

Your results will include your total body fat mass, total lean mass, bone mass, regional body fat and lean mass distribution (trunk, arms, legs and android/gynoid regions) and generalized bone mineral density.

Unless noted otherwise, the results will also include a Visceral Fat/Abdominal Fat (VAT) reading.

For T Score & Z Score ask at your appointment.

How can I prepare for my DEXA?

  • Wear comfortable clothes, such as gym attire.
  • Do not wear any items with metal or hard plastic, such as buttons, zippers, jewelry, watches, hair clips, bras with metal clasps or underwires.
  • Inform the test administrator if you have any metal in your body, such as a pin or replacement joint.
  • No fasting required. Food and water intake has little to no impact on the accuracy of DEXA scan results.
  • Please note that DEXA scans do subject you to small amounts of radiation. A whole body scan produces a level of radiation equivalent to flying by airplane from New York to California.
  • Due to the radiation described above, if you believe you may be pregnant, please refrain from doing the DEXA scan.

What can I expect at my DEXA appointment?

You can expect a 15 minute full body scan paired with an overview of your results and possible solutions for next steps on your health journey.

How do I schedule my DEXA?

After purchasing your DEXA on dexascan.com you will receive 2 emails. One of payment confirmation and the second with steps to schedule your appointment. Any questions please email contact@dexascan.com.
